Sustainability in the dorms
Join the cross-dormitory energy-saving competition and win prize money for a dormitory party with your dorm! You've all surely
noticed: energy is currently scarce and expensive. So it's high time
to do something! If you and all dorm residents save just a little
energy, it adds up to a lot together.
So be active and participate in the cross-dormitory energy-saving competition. Face the challenge together, save valuable energy,
and spare your wallet.
From May 2023 to mid-June 2023, all dormitories of the Studierendenwerk Freiburg will compete against each other in an energy-saving competition.
All residents of Freiburg dormitories. Each dormitory competes as a single unit in the competition.
Electricity consumption is measured, as there are many ways to save electricity in dormitories. Since each dormitory is built differently and has different sizes, the percentage savings of electricity per capita will be compared between dormitories during the initial period.
- Initial period: 11.4. to 2.5.
(= 3 weeks, measurement on 11.4. and 2.5. = Starting point)
- First measurement: 23.5.
(= 3 weeks after the end of the initial period = Intermediate status)
- Second and final measurement: 13.6.
(= 3 weeks after the first measurement)
Since you compete as a dormitory unit, you also win as a dormitory unit. The dormitory with the largest electricity savings wins the prize money for a dormitory party!
Learn about the energy-saving competition's process while enjoying good food and nice music. Also, find out your dormitory's starting point, i.e., how much electricity has been consumed so far.
Location: T.I.K in StuSie Haus 36 (Sundgauallee 36, Freiburg)
We will measure your dormitory's electricity consumption on 11.4. and 2.5. This will determine the kilowatt-hour consumption per capita in each dormitory during the initial period. This number represents your dormitory's starting point.
During the opening ceremony, on our website, and on SWFR and dormitory social media channels, we will inform you about your dormitory's starting point.
Learn about sensible, energy-saving behavior. Good tips can be found, for example, in the "Flip the Switch" project and during the competition on your dormitory's social media channels and from your dormitory tutors.
Small actions have a big impact: so turn off the lights when you leave the room and unplug your standby devices when you're not using them.
On 23.5., we will evaluate an intermediate status for each dormitory. This intermediate status will be published on all our online channels. This way, you can already reflect on whether your behavior has led to a reduction in electricity consumption and what could be improved.
On 13.6., we will carry out the final measurement. Afterward, the percentage change in electricity consumption per capita of each dormitory will be evaluated.
The winning dormitory is the one that has saved the most electricity per capita as a percentage compared to the starting point by 13.6..
Together, we will crown the winning dormitory of the energy-saving competition during the Summer Festival Week in the MensaGarten - following the motto "Body and Energy."
We will provide you with more information about the closing event at a later time.
On June 27th, SWFR organized an energy self-sufficient bicycle-powered Climate Rave in the MensaGarten as part of the summer festival week: On Frelo stationary bicycles provided by VAG, motivated cyclists produced the electricity for our DJ Roberto through the device of Solare Zukunft e.V.. On site, CampusGrün provided additional entertainment with their interactive booth throwing cans. Almost 250 guests celebrated sustainability together as well as the motto of the evening: Body and Energy. Our sustainability manager was also available to exchange ideas with students during the evening. Thanks to our sponsor Elektrizitätswerke Schönau and the generous provision of bicycles by VAG, the evening was a complete success.
The occasion of the evening was the award ceremony of the winning dormitory of the energy saving competition of all Freiburg dormitories of SWFR, which was held from May to mid-June 2023. The prize money for a dormitory event was awarded to the village council of the Oikos student house in Vauban. This was able to save 0.44% of their electricity consumption per inhabitant:in the initial period (11.4.-2.5.) over the entire measurement period (2.5.-13.6).
